We have always heard of domain names being put up for sale for a huge prize. But this with would be a first of its kind, Drew Carey, the US comedian and game show host, has bid $100,000 to buy the Twitter account @drew. The sale is brainchild of Drew Olanoff, a Twitter user who has used the internet to encourage a positive approach to living with cancer since being diagnosed with Hodgkin’s Lymphoma in May.

Drew Olanoff, who has become something of an internet celebrity since his diagnosis has previously started theĀ Blame Drew’s Cancer website, urging Twitter users to blame their life’s problems on his cancer, with a view to finding a sponsor to donate money to the Lance Armstrong foundation Livestrong for every tweet.

On friday, Drew Olanoff announced that he was inviting bids of more than $10,000 for his@drew account. Drew Carey, responded to the bid posting an update from hisDrewFromTV account saying that he was willing to stump up $25,000. Carey, later sent a message to Olanoff saying that he would raise his offer to $100,000 if the his follower count reached 100,000 by the end of the auction on Nov 9.

As of now Carey’s @DrewFromTv account has more thanĀ 24,973 followers, an increase of more than 10K in one day, this being the last tweet from Carey,

Up to 23k followers. 10k in ONE DAY! Remember, $100k to Livestrong if I hit 100k followers by 11/9. Thanks everyone! Much love.

It needs to be seen now, if more sale of Twitter accounts start or if people start booking Twitter account on celebrity names.

@milan you are right, thats the account which is up for sale. It’s not for the number of followers for which people may buy the account, its the reason behind it.

@Singha, Twitter was last estimated close to 1 billion dollars.
