I came across this article on how Indian IT employees for losing their productivity due to time spent on social media sites such as Facebook, Twitter and Orkut etc. The survey also revealed77% of workers access social media sites during working hours.

Lets face it. We all use social networking sites and it sure as hell is addictive. While my mailbox is kept open all through my working hours, I open Facebook when I get update notification. It is faster to find someone through a Facebook update than through a mail. Does that bring their productivity down?

Most of the Indian companies block the social networking sites and have stringent company rules. The companies should stop being shallow and measure the productivity by delivery of work and not the time spent working. Most of the companies still believe in working long hours and keeping a watch on their employees.

Yes Facebook, Twitter or any other social networking site can be addictive and a user needs to keep a tap on it not to go over board. In my opinion, these sites work like coffee or TT breaks. A company which never allowed employees to have any break would certainly mind its employees spending time at anything but work.

Having said that, I’d still advise people to not carried away by social media and keep a balance between their work and networking.Even with a large user base in various social networking sites, India still in its infancy. Its a huge market with internet marketing and usage of Social Media having lot of prospect.

I’d love to know your thought on the issue? Do you think banning the social networking sites help raise the productivity?

It’s how you use social networking that’s important to recognize. For me, networking sites are fundamental to finding business leads and identifying prospects. It’s the social chatter I would advise keeping to a minimum. A lot more time has been spent at water coolers trashing fellow employees than people spend sending holiday wishes over the Internet.
