One of the greatest strength of Twitter is it’s large eco-system which it has supported for years. Twitter has given opportunities to many entrepreneurs and startups to make their name in the market, and this has led to creation of totally different market for the applications. But one of the major draw backs of Twitter has been its speed.
150 API requests per hour is not enough for an applications to bring out the potential of Twitter. Hence, the Director of Twitter Platform have announced a raise in the bar. He has mentioned in his mails to the developer that the limit on the number of times an application can request information from Twitter for a single user will be raised to 10 times what it is today (from 150 req/hr to 1500/hr).

With the recent launches of Retweet, Lists and Geotagging we have seen applications struggle to provide the experience they want for their users within the 150 req/hr limit. We are excited to open the skies up a bit and provide some more room for developers to work within. Starting in a few weeks all OAuth requests to api.twitter.com/1/ will be able to take advantage of a 10x rate limit increase. Basic Whitelisting still exists and is unchanged. We look forward to what this means in terms of the increased richness around the user experience in Twitter apps.Source : Twitter Google Groups
Currently, Twitter has about 50,000 applications and Twitter itself have been adding new features like Re-tweet, List and Geo Tagging to provide third party users more ability to bring out the experience. The new rate limit will certainly improve the experience of all the third party twitter application.
